Published 20 days agoΒ β’Β 11 min read
Kansas City continues to see a steady mix of expansion, investment, and cultural momentum shaping both the metro and surrounding areas. This edition, weβre looking at: β
West Bottoms Plant Company is expanding beyond Kansas City with a new sister shop called Mass Street Plant Company, set for a soft opening May 2 at 6 E 7th St in downtown Lawrence, the former Jungle House space. The shop will carry houseplants, locally made goods, and curated gifts alongside a smaller-format ADHDIY Craft Cafe with seating for about 20 guests. Owners Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson opened West Bottoms Plant Company in 2022 and currently support more than 180 local artists and makers at their KC location. A grand opening is planned for June.
βΎ KC MONARCHS BEGIN NEW ERA UNDER QUINT STUDER AND KC ROOTSβ Kansas City's independent baseball team has a new owner. Mark Brandmeyer, who led the Monarchs to back-to-back championships, sold the franchise to healthcare executive Quint Studer and the KC Roots group. Studer says retaining the current staff is his top priority as the team heads into a new chapter. The home opener is May 19 against the Chicago Dogs at Legends Field.
π KANSAS CITY SECURES $100,000 AIRBNB INVESTMENT TO ACTIVATE LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR WORLD CUPβ Airbnb is putting $100,000 into Kansas City's Open Doors! program, placing local entrepreneurs into vacant storefronts along the streetcar corridor ahead of this summer's World Cup. The city expects roughly 11,000 Airbnb guests during the tournament, generating an estimated $105 million in economic activity. Airbnb will also serve as the exclusive lead sponsor of a Small Business Guide connecting global visitors to local shops and restaurants across the urban core. The investment is administered through the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City.
ποΈ WE COULD SEE A "PLAZA OF THE NORTHLAND" ON 400 UNUSED ACRES NEAR I-435β Kansas City has proposed a plan to redevelop 400 acres near I-435 and NE Shoal Creek Parkway, currently owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The TIF-funded project would bring a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, apartments, retail, restaurants, a possible hotel, and entertainment or sports facilities to the area. New tax revenue generated by the development would fund project costs over 23 years, with 5% shared annually with local taxing districts. Some are already calling it the Plaza of the Northland.
π CARDVAULT BY TOM BRADY IS COMING TO POWER AND LIGHT DISTRICTβ Tom Brady's sports card and collectibles chain is opening a location at the Power and Light District. Kansas City was named one of three new cities in a single expansion announcement alongside Austin and Los Angeles, bringing the chain to 17 total locations. Brady purchased a 50% stake in CardVault in early 2025 alongside founder Chris Costa and has since grown the brand from 6 stores to a national footprint carrying sports cards, Pokemon, and collectibles.
πΈ PEARL JAM GRANTS $45,000 TO GRANDVIEW NONPROFIT ART HOUSEβ Art House Grandview, a community arts nonprofit with two locations on Main Street in Grandview, was selected as the April grantee by Pearl Jam's Vitalogy Foundation through its Future Days Fund. The $45,000 grant supports completely free music education for kids, no tuition and no gatekeeping. Founder Josh Scott traces the whole thing back to hearing Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready's solo on "Alive" as a teenager in Alabama, an experience that led him to build JHS Pedals into a globally recognized KC guitar brand and later found Art House. Pearl Jam's announcement post reached 3.8 million followers on Instagram.

Royals Land Downtown Future with Crown Center Ballpark Plan
The Kansas City Royals and Hallmark Cards have announced a partnership to develop an 85-acre mixed-use baseball district anchored at Crown Center, formally moving plans away from Washington Square Park. The $1.9 billion ballpark would sit at the heart of the development, surrounded by retail, dining, residential, and entertainment space, with Hallmark relocating its headquarters as part of the broader build-out. Two-thirds of funding will come from private sources, with the remaining third supported by city and state partners. Breaking ground is expected in 2027.
