KC Crew Fall Leagues Open Now!

Making friends as an adult is hard. That's the whole reason KC Crew exists.

Fifteen years ago the founder was new to town and didn't know anybody, so he did the only reasonable thing and built a league. Today it's Kansas City's OG sport and social club, and close to 15,000 locals play every year.

Sand volleyball. Kickball. Softball. Pickleball. Flag football. Fields running from Zona Rosa all the way down to Overland Park.

Here's the part that matters. You don't need a team and you don't need to be good. Sign up completely solo and they'll drop you onto a roster with a few hundred other people doing the exact same thing. Nobody is checking your stats.

That's how this works. People show up for the game and leave with a friend group.

🏡 KANSAS CITY APPROVES $24.5 MILLION FOR HOUSING ACROSS 26 PROJECTS​
Kansas City, Missouri approved $24.5 million for housing and neighborhood investment, with $16.4 million from the city's Housing Trust Fund across 16 projects and $8 million from the Central City Economic Development sales tax fund across 10 urban core projects. The package funds 907 housing units, 746 of them affordable, more than 80 percent of the total. The money covers new construction, home repair, homelessness prevention, and homeownership programs.

🏗️ SHAWNEE APPROVES REC-CENTRIC A 277-UNIT ACTIVE ADULT HIGH-RISE​
The Shawnee Planning Commission voted 6-0 on July 20 to approve rezoning and a preliminary site plan for Rec-Centric, a 277-unit high-rise standing four to five stories near I-435 and Renner Road. Developer Steve Beaumont pitched the recreation-focused, active-adult concept after moving his mother into a 55-and-older community in Olathe in 2019. The plan drew questions over parking, with 1.47 spaces per unit against the city's standard of 2 per dwelling. The project still needs further city approvals.

🏗️ PRAIRIE VILLAGE OKS REZONING OF OLD YMCA SITE FOR 20 HOMES​
The Prairie Village City Council voted unanimously on July 20 to rezone the former Paul Henson YMCA site at 4200 W. 79th St. for a 20-home redevelopment by Overland Park based Price Brothers. The rezoning shifts the site to a single-family district with smaller lot sizes and centers the plan on greenspace. A new public sidewalk will run through four of the homes, connecting 79th Street to Harmon Park.

⚾ ROYALS ENTER THE AUG. 3 TRADE DEADLINE AS NEITHER BUYERS NOR SELLERS​
The Kansas City Royals enter the August 3 MLB trade deadline near the bottom of the AL Central after a disappointing first half. MLB.com reports the club plans to add near-ready talent for 2027 rather than run a full teardown or buy for this season. Kansas City says it will listen on All-Star starter Michael Wacha, who made his first All-Star team in 11 years, but has no intention of trading him.

🍎 HOLLIS + MILLER GIVES AWAY $500 CLASSROOM GRANTS TO KC TEACHERS​
Kansas City architecture firm Hollis + Miller is handing out $500 back-to-school grants to teachers across Missouri and Kansas for classroom supplies and learning tools. Certified teachers and district staff on both sides of the state line are eligible to apply. The firm says it has donated more than $25,000 to area educators since the program began, with 2026 submissions opening soon.

🎭 STARLIGHT CASTS DISNEY'S NEWSIES WITH 50+ PERFORMERS AND 33 KC TEENS​
Starlight Theatre announced the cast for Disney's Newsies, running September 8 to 13, 2026, with more than 50 performers. The ensemble includes 33 Kansas City-area high school students chosen through the Blue Star Awards program from hundreds who auditioned. The six-performance run pairs local and national talent at the outdoor venue at 4600 Starlight Road.

• Riding the KC Streetcar just got a little safer. The KC Streetcar Authority has launched See Say — a new way for riders to report safety concerns, maintenance issues, or general comments quickly and discreetly, anytime they're on board or waiting at a stop.
• The city just opened its 2026 PLANT Grant (Promoting Local Agriculture and Neighborhood Transformation), which funds community gardens and urban farms that expand local food production and make fresh food easier to get.

🏢 DEVELOPMENT SCENE

KC BIOHUB RECEIVES $38.1 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING

On Monday, July 21, KC BioHub announced an initial $38.1 million award from the U.S. Economic Development Administration's Tech Hubs program. It is the region's first major federal funding tied to its 2023 designation as a national Tech Hub, and organizers say the total could reach $150 million across future rounds.

The award funds five initiatives focused on biomanufacturing, the production of biologic drugs and critical materials at scale. They include the SCALE Center, led by MRIGlobal, to support FDA approval of advanced manufacturing processes; EPIC, led by KC BioHub, a hub for domestic drug production; BioSupply Crossroads, led by Kansas Manufacturing Solutions, to reshore production of critical materials; and BioTalent Catalyst, focused on workforce training. KC BioHub is a program of BioNexus KC and is backed by more than 115 regional partners.

Regional leaders project the effort could create roughly 11,000 jobs and add $9.2 billion in economic impact over ten years, with an estimated $11 return for every $1 invested. Those figures are projections rather than current results, and the award is the first of what backers describe as multiple anticipated rounds. The funding places Kansas City among the regions competing for federal investment aimed at expanding domestic drug and biotech manufacturing.

100+ VOLUNTEERS RESTORE THE HISTORIC NORTHEAST'S INTERNATIONAL FLAG MURAL

The colorful international flag mural along Van Brunt Boulevard is a vibrant symbol of the Historic Northeast again. Over two volunteer workdays this week, more than 100 volunteers — KC Parks Ambassadors, neighborhood residents, corporate crews, and community groups — came together with Kansas City Parks & Recreation to restore and expand the mural bordering the retaining walls at the 9th & Van Brunt Athletic Fields Park.

Created nearly two decades ago, the mural had faded and suffered vandalism over the years. Now more than 100 national flags stretch along the bridge walls, with duplicate designs replaced and dozens of new flags added to better reflect the neighborhood's growing international community — long one of Kansas City's most culturally diverse. A special assist came from Thrasher Foundation Repair, whose team spent its annual community service day not only painting but repairing and stabilizing the bridge's concrete. KC Parks crews then sealed the finished mural with a high-grade anti-graffiti coating.

The timing lands on purpose: at the close of a summer that brought the world to Kansas City, the renewed mural stands as a colorful gateway celebrating inclusion and belonging for the youth athletes, families, and visitors who pass through the fields each year.

LEGACY, REIMAGINED:​
THE CHIEFS UNVEIL THEIR $3 BILLION DOMED STADIUM

The Chiefs finally showed their hand. On July 22, the team released the first concept renderings of a new, fully enclosed $3 billion stadium set to open for the 2031 season — the centerpiece of the franchise's planned move across the state line to Kansas City, Kansas, near the Kansas Speedway and The Legends.

The headline feature is the roof. A translucent ETFE dome — more than 400,000 square feet of paneling — will keep the field bright enough for the Chiefs' signature military flyovers while finally putting Kansas City weather on the sidelines. The bowl holds around 70,000, with 20,000-plus parking spots, and its size, shape, and roof geometry were tuned by audio engineers for one specific purpose: preserving the Arrowhead roar that once set a Guinness world record for stadium noise.

The pitch to a skeptical fan base is continuity. The renderings deliberately echo Arrowhead's defining geometry — the three-tier bowl, the swooping lines, the yellow seats through the middle — and carry over traditions fans would riot to lose: the Drum Deck, the Ring of Honor, and a parking layout built with pedestrian boulevards to protect the tailgate. Outside, the plans show the Lamar Hunt statue anchoring a new plaza, a Chiefs Hall of Honor more than double its current size, and a team store roughly four times larger. KC-based MANICA is lead design architect; HNTB is architect of record.

The caveat, in the Chiefs' own words: these are initial concepts, subject to change as details — and financing — get finalized.
