KC FACT OF THE WEEK
๐ Why this one, this week: Edge of Hell opens its 52nd season Friday night in the West Bottoms.
๐ง Kansas City was once called the haunted house capital of the world. In the 1980s there were 14 haunted houses downtown alone, according to Amber Arnett-Bequeaith of Full Moon Productions, known as the "Queen of Haunts," whose first role was lying in a coffin at Edge of Hell at age 5. Edge of Hell opened in the River Market in 1975, moved to Seventh and Wyandotte, and landed in the West Bottoms in 1988, inside a warehouse more than 100 years old. Haunted houses tended to set up in empty or half-empty buildings, and the Bottoms had plenty: the district never fully recovered from the Great Flood of 1951. Today Edge of Hell is billed as the oldest commercial haunted attraction in the country. Want the rest of the flood story? The Heartland Book Festival has a talk on it Saturday at the Central Library.
The Fall Festival of Arts, Crafts & Music hits its 50th year at the living history village in Fleming Park, with craft vendors, music, Lost Arts demonstrations and interpreters showing what autumn looked like in the mid-1800s.
