🏭 MRIGLOBAL TO BUILD FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND BIOMANUFACTURING CENTER IN NORTH KC​
MRIGlobal will develop the SCALE Center at its North Kansas City lab at 1222 Ozark St., backed by a $38.1 million federal award to the KC BioHub consortium. The money is a four-year U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hubs grant: $34.1 million federal plus a $4 million local match from the Kauffman, Block, Hall, and Health Forward foundations. The center will add modular cGMP suites to scale production of cancer treatments, gene therapies, and rare-disease drugs, and KC BioHub could draw up to $150 million in future rounds. No construction timeline has been set yet.

🏫 ACADÉMIE LAFAYETTE BUYS HISTORIC WESTPORT JUNIOR HIGH​
Académie Lafayette, KC's French-immersion charter school, signed a purchase agreement for the former Westport Middle School, a 1924 building that closed as a school in 2010 and later became the Plexpod Westport Commons coworking space. The school plans to renovate it into a middle and high school campus for about 600 students, targeting the 2027-28 school year. The site adds science labs, multiple gyms, an auditorium, and athletic fields the current Armour campus lacks. The deal is still in due diligence, so a closing date has not been set.

🏡 PLATTE COUNTY HOMESTEAD TAX CREDIT IS LIVE, WITH APPEALS DUE SEPT. 11​
Platte County has begun rolling out the homestead property tax credit voters approved in April by 79.4% to 20.6%, auto-enrolling roughly 20,300 parcels with no application needed for 2026. The credit caps annual property tax increases on a primary residence at 5%, or the CPI increase, whichever is greater. Homeowners can check enrollment on the county's parcel lookup, appeal a missing parcel until Sept. 11, or opt out. A pending Missouri lawsuit challenging the enabling law could still suspend or end the program.

🏠 JOHNSON COUNTY LOANS $2.5M TO KEEP OVERLAND PARK ACCESSIBLE HOUSING ALIVE​
Johnson County approved a $2.5 million, 0%-interest gap loan on a 6-1 vote to Friends of JCDS so its Floyd Street apartments in downtown Overland Park can break ground, expected Sept. 1. The project at 79th and Floyd will bring 17 one- and two-bedroom units for up to 19 residents with intellectual and mental-health challenges, plus a JCDS Emerging Artists studio and gallery. Inflation pushed the budget from $6.5 million to $9.7 million, and the county loan bridges grant-timing delays.

🏘️ OVERLAND PARK PLANNERS BACK 47-UNIT ANTIOCH HOMES ON OLD SMSD SITE​
The Overland Park Planning Commission voted 8-0 on Aug. 10 to recommend a rezoning that would turn the former Shawnee Mission School District office site at 7235 Antioch Road into Antioch Homes, a 47-unit rental neighborhood. Developer Gravel Development plans 21 buildings of duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes, each with two-car garages, on the four-acre lot where the McEachen Administrative Building was demolished last year. The rezoning still needs City Council approval, expected around Sept. 14, and some neighbors are organizing a protest petition over traffic and density.

♻️ TO-GO CUPS NOW GO IN THE CURBSIDE BIN​
WM now accepts polypropylene plastic and paper to-go cups in curbside recycling, covering WM customers across much of the KC metro on both sides of the state line. Foam cups still are not accepted, and cups should be empty and clean. WM added the cups to its national accepted-materials list in a push with Starbucks, and more than 60% of U.S. households can now recycle cold to-go cups curbside. Because it runs through WM's service, it does not cover every metro household.

• Kansas City is officially moving forward with bids to host two major sporting events in 2031. Mayor Quinton Lucas announced today that the city is advancing its bids for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Men’s Rugby World Cup.
• A proposed nonprofit art space at 3632 Locust Street would bring immersive installations, small gatherings, and arts programming to the neighborhood.
• ​Coca-Cola Game Days are returning to KC Live! in the Power & Light District for the 2026 NFL season, bringing fans together downtown for watch parties, game-day energy, and football all season long. Preseason events are free, while regular-season Game Days are $20 per person.

🏢 DEVELOPMENT SCENE

OAK PARK MALL'S $200M+ REINVENTION: APARTMENTS, A HOTEL AND A THEATER

The metro's biggest enclosed mall is asking to stop being just a mall. In a preliminary development plan now under review by Overland Park (case PDP2026-00016), Oak Park Mall's owner — Chattanooga-based CBL Properties — wants to rezone the roughly 89-acre property at 95th and Quivira (11855 W. 95th St.) into a walkable, mixed-use district anchored by housing and entertainment rather than department stores.

The plan, as submitted to the city on June 30, adds a four-story, 260-unit apartment complex (two courtyards, a pool, grilling stations and fire pits), a four-story, 120-key hotel, and a new three-level theater and conference center, plus additional restaurants and structured parking. Counterintuitively for a property famous for its sea of parking, the proposal actually shrinks surface asphalt to make room for green space and parkland — and the city's stormwater review projects less runoff, not more. One piece is already further along: a Chick-fil-A outparcel, whose traffic study Overland Park approved on July 20.

Here's where it stands. The application landed May 19 and is assigned to city planner Keith Gooch; staff issued their review comments Aug. 6. The Overland Park Planning Commission was set to take it up Aug. 10, but the hearing was continued to Sept. 14 at the applicant's request — so nothing is approved yet, and the rezoning still needs the Commission and, ultimately, the City Council. For a mall that opened in 1975 and has anchored Johnson County retail for 50 years, it's a bet that the property's next chapter is people living there, not just shopping there.

WICKED CASTS ITS SPELL AT THE KANSAS CITY MUSIC HALL THROUGH AUG. 30

The biggest title on the KC Broadway Series calendar this summer is here. Wicked, the Tony-winning prequel that reimagines The Wizard of Oz through its two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, is playing the Music Hall through Aug. 30, riding a wave of new fans from its blockbuster two-part film. It brings the full spectacle: Tony Award-winning scenic and costume design, a live orchestra, and showstoppers like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity."

🏐 SPORTS SCENE

THE ROYALS' $3B DOWNTOWN BALLPARK HIT A SPEED BUMP AT CITY HALL

The vote everyone expected didn't happen. Kansas City's Council was set to take up the lease and development agreement for the Royals' proposed ~$3 billion Crown Center ballpark on Aug. 13, but Mayor Quinton Lucas held the items, pushing any decision to a committee meeting no sooner than Sept. 1.

The project cleared a unanimous City Plan Commission rezoning on Aug. 5 and has roughly $600 million in public financing (via tax-increment financing) tentatively behind it, with the team and private money covering the other two-thirds.

Backers call it a downtown-defining anchor targeting a 2030 opening. Opponents, including an active petition campaign, say the public still doesn't know where the $600M comes from or what community benefits were secured, and that the Council is moving too fast.

Next stop: Sept. 1.

KANSAS CITY WANTS THE WORLD BACK: KC ADVANCES BIDS FOR TWO 2031 WORLD CUPS

Kansas City isn't ready to give up the international spotlight. Fresh off hosting six matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Arrowhead averaged nearly 69,000 fans a game, Mayor Quinton Lucas moved in late July to push the city toward not one but two more global events: the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup.

The mayor introduced measures at City Council formally advancing both bids, including an ordinance authorizing the city manager to sign a host-city agreement with FIFA for the Women's World Cup and signaling that KC is willing to commit funding to land it. Arrowhead Stadium would be the primary venue for both tournaments, with CPKC Stadium (home of the KC Current, and the first stadium in the world purpose-built for a women's pro team) as the secondary site and a genuine selling point for the women's event.

The catch: both are long shots on paper, and neither is decided.

The bids at a glance:

• 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup — a 48-team tournament under a joint US, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica bid; KC is one of 14 US cities in the running. FIFA's host-city decision is scheduled for Nov. 23, 2026.
• 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup — KC is one of 27 cities competing for a spot.
• Primary venue: Arrowhead Stadium (both) · Secondary: CPKC Stadium (both)

If either lands, it's another multi-week wave of visitors, watch parties and small-business business for the metro, the same playbook that made KC a breakout host in 2026. For now, the city is simply making its case to host the world again.
