⚽ FROM THE SPORTING KC: ROOTED IN THE HEARTBEAT OF 18TH & VINE Sporting Kansas City unveiled their new 18th & Vine secondary kit ahead of the 2026 season, a jersey inspired by Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine jazz district that highlights neon-inspired script, rhythmic patterns, and cultural nods to the neighborhood’s music legacy. The kit launches at the team’s Feb. 28 home opener and was introduced with community-focused events including a pop-up concert featuring UMKC jazz students on the KC Streetcar.
🏠 WYANDOTTE COUNTY AMENDS SHORT-TERM RENTAL POLICY TO MEET WORLD CUP HOUSING DEMAND The Wyandotte County commission updated short-term rental rules ahead of the FIFA World Cup, speeding up approvals to three business days and setting fines from $1,000 to $15,000 for violations to encourage more homes to legally host visitors.
🏢 PLATFORM VENTURES SAYS IT WILL NOT SELL SOUTH KANSAS CITY WAREHOUSE TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT After public pressure and local government pushback over plans by Platform Ventures to sell a warehouse at the former Richards-Gebaur site for use as a federal detention center, the company confirmed it won’t move forward with the sale, ending a contentious debate over the future of the facility.
🍻 BILL WOULD ALLOW KANSAS BARS TO STAY OPEN 24/7 DURING WORLD CUP State lawmakers introduced a proposal allowing bars in Kansas to serve alcohol around the clock throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament, aiming to boost hospitality business by matching Missouri’s already-approved late-night World Cup alcohol rules.
📦 AMAZON LAUNCHES PRIME AIR DRONE DELIVERY FOR PARTS OF KANSAS CITY Amazon has officially launched its Prime Air drone delivery service in parts of the Kansas City area, now delivering packages up to five pounds within about a 7.5-mile radius of its KCK fulfillment center during daylight hours, making KC one of the first U.S. metro markets with regular drone delivery.
Mayor Quinton Lucas used his seventh State of the City address to pledge that Kansas City will complete a deal in 2026 to keep the Royals in the city with a proposed downtown ballpark, calling the move critical to long-term economic growth.
Downtown Kansas City Set for 33-Story Residential Tower with $2M Affordable Housing Contribution
EPC Real Estate Group is proposing a 33-story high-rise, The Encore at 16th and Broadway, in Downtown Kansas City, directly across from the Kauffman Center. The project aims to repurpose vacant land and aging structures into 392 residential units with modern amenities, including a rooftop pool overlooking downtown, as well as retail and restaurant spaces. Port KC President Jon Stephens emphasized that the development will help revitalize a high-profile area that has seen little growth in recent years, while also supporting local businesses and boosting downtown density. The project is designed as the first phase of a larger mixed-use master plan along the Broadway Boulevard corridor, providing economic benefits such as increased funding for the KC Streetcar and a minimum $2 million contribution to the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Developers plan to request tax incentives, and the Port KC Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the financial package in the coming weeks, with continued collaboration between city stakeholders to ensure community and economic benefits.

Kansas City Becomes Central Hub for Three World Cup Powerhouses
Kansas City is emerging as a major hub for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with three top international teams—England, the Netherlands, and reigning champions Argentina—selecting the metro area as their base camps. England, currently ranked fourth in the world, will train at Swope Soccer Village, the home of Sporting KC II, while preparing for group-stage matches in Dallas, Boston, and the New York–New Jersey area. The Netherlands, ranked seventh globally and a three-time World Cup finalist, will use the $20 million Kansas City Current Training Facility in Riverside, Missouri, which offers professional-grade grass pitches, advanced training and recovery spaces, and on-site operations, with their final group-stage match taking place in Kansas City. Argentina has also chosen the city for its central location, efficient travel to other host cities, and strong amenities for players and staff, opening its Group J matches locally before traveling to Dallas. These decisions reinforce Kansas City’s growing international soccer footprint, alongside other regional training sites—including Sporting KC’s Kansas City, Kansas facility and Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence—pending final FIFA approval, positioning the city as a key preparation and competition hub during the tournament.
