✨ 2025 in KC: The Stories, Moments, and Moves That Shaped Our City
Published 2 months ago • 10 min read
This was the year we stopped just covering Kansas City and started helping shape how people experience it.
We showed up consistently, built real partnerships, and focused on making The KC Scene something you actually trust when you’re deciding where to go, what to do, or what’s worth your time.
We didn’t chase everything. We curated.
This year, we expanded our weekly and seasonal guides, leaned into deeper storytelling around food, music, nightlife, and culture, and collaborated with some of Kansas City’s most exciting venues, brands, and creators. We also introduced Mollified, a KC Scene article series written by Mollie Talbot, offering a more personal, narrative take on date nights, local experiences, and the moments that make this city feel lived-in, not just visited.
Behind the scenes, we built better systems so we could grow without losing what makes this platform feel human.

Rock Island Bridge Moves Toward Its Full 2026 Opening After a November Soft Launch
November Preview: In mid-November 2025, developers hosted a soft opening weekend on the bridge, allowing pedestrians to enter from the east side and take in the views. This sneak peek came after the project secured its initial occupancy permits in the fall, even as finishing touches continued. (For now, access is only from the Kansas side due to ongoing work on the opposite bank.)
Spring 2026 Grand Opening: The official opening is planned for spring 2026, once all final inspections and permits are in hand. By then, the River House restaurant will be serving up its full menu and the event hall will be ready to host gatherings. A ribbon-cutting and community celebration is expected to kick off the bridge’s full operations – perfectly timed for warmer weather and the 2026 riverfront season.
Final Construction Checks: Remaining construction is largely focused on the west-side entry. The Unified Government in KCK is completing a secondary ramp and staircase to connect the bridge’s far end; that segment is anticipated to finish by mid-2026. Once it’s done, folks will be able to access the bridge from both sides of the river, fully realizing the cross-city link. Additionally, any outstanding infrastructure work (from trail links to dock installations for kayakers) will wrap up as the venue scales up.
Full Steam Ahead: Beyond the grand opening, the Rock Island Bridge team, including developer Flying Truss and local partners, is lining up an events calendar to keep the attraction buzzing. Plans include everything from weekly concerts and food truck rallies to seasonal festivals and farmers’ markets. By late 2026, with all phases complete, the bridge will be a permanently “alive with energy” landmark over the Kansas River, blending Kansas City history with new riverside adventures.
Bottom line: the Rock Island Bridge project is entering its final stretch. With a successful soft launch under its belt and a few last hurdles to clear, Kansas Citians can look forward to a one-of-a-kind destination bridging our two states. Mark your calendars for spring – big things are arriving over the river soon! 🎉

Cougar Club: Where Grown Women Go to Dance Without Apology in Kansas City
Tired? Worn out? Living mostly in your head and forgetting what it feels like to be in your body? No, this isn’t the latest TikTok ad.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. You’re probably living the same life a lot of us are right now.
In her newest Mollified piece, Mollie writes about what happens when exhaustion, overstimulation, and the weight of daily roles push us to look for something more human.
She found it on a Kansas City dance floor built for people who need community, safety, movement, and joy, without pressure or performance. This story isn’t really about a party. (Although it is one of the best we have been to so far) It’s about remembering yourself, finding your people, and letting your body breathe again.
This story is written by Mollie Talbot for The KC Scene.
It’s the next feature in our new column, Mollified in KC

Kansas City Pride For The Kansas City Royals
Downtown Kansas City turned blue this week in a visible show of support for the Kansas City Royals, with Union Station helping kick off the moment after lighting up and posting that “the time has come for downtown baseball.” The coordinated lighting came as conversations around a potential downtown stadium continue, following stalled plans at the Truman Sports Complex and the failed Jackson County stadium sales tax.
Mayor Quinton Lucas has publicly supported Washington Square Park, just east of Union Station, as a possible stadium site. In explaining its stance, Union Station shared that a downtown ballpark offers something special, bringing friends, families, and fans together in moments of shared joy, strengthening community, celebrating teamwork, and highlighting the simple beauty of the game.
