Published 4 days ago • 11 min read
Kansas City’s World Cup era is starting to feel very real. This edition covers:
Arrowhead officially becoming Kansas City Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2026
All four KC pro teams teaming up for a massive community blood drive
FIFA dropping a limited-edition Kansas City World Cup jersey
Big Slick returning for year 17 with another celebrity-filled weekend
The KC Streetcar officially reaching the Riverfront this Monday
KCHouse opening on the Plaza as KC’s new World Cup hospitality hub
Plus: more signs that Kansas City is ramping up for one of the biggest moments in the city’s history
New signage went up at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium the week of May 5, officially marking Kansas City as a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city. The stadium will host six group stage matches and one Round of 32 match, starting June 15. Tickets for the KC matches are available through FIFA's official platform.
All four Kansas City pro teams are joining forces for the We Bleed KC community blood drive this Monday, May 18. The Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC, and KC Current are hosting the drive at Boulevard Brewing Beer Hall from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every donation helps save up to three lives, and donors score a limited-edition co-branded We Bleed KC t-shirt plus a shot at team prize packages. Schedule your appointment at savealifenow.org/webleedkc
FIFA dropped a limited-edition Kansas City host city jersey, and only 999 were made worldwide. The collector's box set runs $375 and comes individually numbered and NFC-authenticated, with a Certificate of Authentication, collector's book, and luxury packaging. The design pulls from Kansas City's identity across both Missouri and Kansas. It sold out fast. Check resale if you missed it.
Big Slick Celebrity Weekend returns May 29 to 30 for its 17th year raising money for Children's Mercy Hospital. This year looks a little different, with no Celebrity Classic softball game since the Royals are out of town for the World Cup schedule, and a new Friday VIP experience at Kauffman Stadium called "Just This Year." The main event goes Saturday, May 30 at T-Mobile Center with Rob Riggle, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Eric Stonestreet, and crew. Big Slick has raised more than $30 million for Children's Mercy since 2010.
Kansas City's $62 million Riverfront Extension opens Monday, May 18, connecting the existing streetcar line to Berkley Riverfront and CPKC Stadium. The Grand Opening Ceremony starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverfront stop with remarks from Mayor Quinton Lucas, followed by a free community picnic at Berkley Riverfront Park with live music, food trucks, and yard games through 2:00 p.m. Streetcar service to the Riverfront begins immediately after the ceremony.
KCHouse, Kansas City's 3-story World Cup hospitality hub, is now open at 111 Nichols Road on the Country Club Plaza in the former Forever 21 space. The venue spans three floors: a curated exhibition floor for partner showcases, a flexible lounge with private meeting pods and a thought leadership stage, and a rooftop bar with jazz and acoustic performances. KC2026 built it as a Global Gateway connecting international business leaders, civic officials, and visiting dignitaries through the tournament.
What you might have missed last week
As Kansas City gets ready to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the city has approved extended operating hours for bars and restaurants from June 11 through July 19, 2026.
Town Topic says its Broadway location will temporarily stop operating 24 hours a day due to ongoing safety concerns around the restaurant.
Purina and KC2026 are teaming up with KC Pet Project for Purina Dog Days — a donation-driven adoption program built right into the Fan Festival experience.

COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA: $1.5B REDEVELOPMENT HEADS TO COUNCIL VOTE
Texas-based Gillon Property Group, which purchased the Country Club Plaza in 2024, is proposing a $1.5 billion redevelopment that would add hundreds of apartments, two boutique hotels, rebuilt retail, and updated infrastructure to one of KC's most iconic districts. The plan includes a $210 million TIF for long-overdue sewer and stormwater improvements and a 30-year property tax incentive through Port KC.
The rezoning ordinances went before the Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee this week. Both were held Tuesday. A full council vote is expected next Thursday.
Supporers say the investment is necessary. The Plaza has lost major tenants and sits at more than 50 vacant storefronts. Developer Dustin Bullard has said the goal is to create "a place for future generations."
Critics have concerns on several fronts. Neighborhood groups and Historic KC are pushing for a 75-foot building height cap; Gillon is seeking flexibility up to 180 feet on some structures, which opponents say conflicts with a 2019 City Council framework meant to preserve the Plaza's scale. Kansas City Public Schools has opposed the tax incentive terms, arguing the deal does not guarantee the district meaningful new revenue. A separate proposal to transfer ownership of some Plaza sidewalks to the developer has raised questions about public access rights.

The Kansas City Chiefs rolled out their 2026 NFL schedule with a Taylor Swift-inspired social media campaign centered around sourdough bread, baking jokes, and hidden clues tied to each opponent. The post referenced Swift’s known love of sourdough and her relationship with Travis Kelce, but the unusual concept quickly divided fans online.
While some enjoyed the creativity and pop culture tie-in, many others criticized the reveal for being confusing and difficult to follow. Even Eric Stonestreet joined the conversation, joking that next year’s schedule announcement should be handled by Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and Brett Veach instead.
Why Kansas City Is the Opposite of Every Major U.S. City
Kansas City is one of the most underrated cities in America right now - and I spent years living somewhere else before I truly understood why. In this video, I'm breaking down the real story behind what's happening here, what's driving it, and why I think the timing matters more than most people realise.
A nearly 1-acre lakefront property in the heart of Old Leawood is about to hit the market… and opportunities like this rarely come around.
3636 W 89th St offers 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, over 4,300 square feet, and exclusive access to Somerset Acres Lake — one of Leawood’s most coveted private lakes.
The setting feels more like a private retreat than a suburban neighborhood. Mature trees, sweeping water views, a sprawling backyard that stretches to the lake, and even a private footbridge leading to the water. Kayak, fish, paddle boat, or simply enjoy one of the most unique backdrops you’ll find anywhere in Johnson County.
The existing home is full of warmth and character, while the nearly 1-acre lot also creates an incredible opportunity to design and build a custom luxury estate surrounded by water views.
Properties like this almost never become available in Old Leawood. Offered at $1.5M.
