Chiefs Move to Kansas Comes With a Record-Breaking Price Tag
Kansas officials have now outlined how the Kansas City Chiefs’ planned move to Kansas would be financed, and it’s big. Like historically big.
The proposed $3 billion project would include:
A new domed stadium in Wyandotte County
A separate practice facility and team headquarters in Johnson County
Roughly $1.8 billion of the cost, about 60%, would come from public funding, making it the largest public subsidy for a sports venue in U.S. history.
How Kansas Plans to Pay for It
Funding would come from:
Kansas STAR bonds
A sports-betting revenue fund created to attract professional teams
Governor Laura Kelly says the deal would not raise or create new taxes, instead relying on sales tax revenue generated by the stadium and surrounding development.
Why It’s Already Controversial
Critics point out that sales tax dollars used to repay stadium bonds are dollars that cannot be spent elsewhere. Decades of academic research also show that public stadium subsidies often fall short of delivering the economic impact they promise.
What This Means for the Royals
The Kansas City Royals were not part of this agreement and remain in talks about potential stadium sites on both sides of the state line.
The Bigger Picture
This move follows years of negotiations across Kansas and Missouri, accelerated after Jackson County voters rejected a stadium sales tax extension in 2024. Missouri lawmakers later approved their own incentive package, but Kansas moved quickly, giving the Chiefs until the end of the year to accept the deal.
Supporters see it as a major win for Kansas. Critics see it as reopening a long-running debate over how much public money should be used to keep professional sports teams.
We’ll keep tracking what this means for the metro, both sides of the state line, and the future of KC sports.
