⚽KC CURRENT FORWARD TEMWA CHAWINGA NAMED 2025 NWSL MVP KC Current forward Temwa Chawinga has officially been named the 2025 NWSL MVP after a breakout season that turned defenders into traffic cones. She led the league in goals, pace, and “did she really just do that?” moments. This is the first MVP in KC Current history and adds another milestone to a franchise already rewriting the league record book.
🏬 GRANDVIEW ANNOUNCES $2.1 MILLION ALL-WEATHER MARKETPLACE Grandview is turning a parking lot into a year round marketplace thanks to a 2.1 million dollar plan aimed at giving local makers, small businesses, and food vendors a dedicated all weather space. Covered structures, improved utilities, and flexible vendor setups are all on deck, designed to boost foot traffic and bring more events to the area.
🍻 KANSAS CITY BREWERIES DOMINATED MISSOURI CRAFT BEER AWARDS Kansas City breweries cleaned up at this year’s Missouri Craft Beer Awards. Multiple local favorites took home top medals across IPA, stout, lager, seasonal, and specialty categories. Boulevard, KC Bier Co, Vine Street Brewing, and others helped KC stand out statewide, reinforcing that the city’s beer scene is very much having a moment.

🚌 JOHNSON COUNTY APPROVES NEW TRANSIT AGREEMENT TO CONNECT TO KCI Overland Park, Lenexa, and Johnson County have approved a joint agreement to expand transit service directly to Kansas City International Airport. The plan is expected to improve access for workers and travelers, tying southern Johnson County more directly to KCI with coordinated regional service.

New Plaza Plan Faces Height Concerns, School Funding Pushback, and a Delayed Vote
Kansas City’s Plaza redevelopment plans are facing growing pushback as new details surface. According to reporting from the Kansas City Business Journal and The Kansas City Star, Gillon Property Group is seeking more than $210 million in tax incentives to help finance a proposed $1.3 billion remake of the historic district — adding more than a million square feet of retail, 750 housing units, and nearly 300 hotel rooms.
But new renderings showing buildings up to 12 stories tall have sparked concern from the Kansas City chapter of the American Institute of Architects and nearby residents, who argue the heights conflict with the Plaza’s long-protected scale. Kansas City Public Schools and the public library have also raised objections, citing a lack of time to review how decades of tax exemptions could affect school funding. As Port KC delays its vote, the debate now sits at the intersection of preservation, density, and public investment — and whether Kansas City can modernize the Plaza without compromising its character or its classrooms.
