Arrowhead Stadium has been transformed into "Kansas City Stadium" as FIFA prepares the venue for its first World Cup match.
The Chiefs promote two executives to help lead development of the team's proposed $3 billion stadium and entertainment district in Kansas.

Oak Park Townhomes opened at the corner of 38th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, with city leaders holding the celebration on June 10, 2026 and calling it a decade in the making. The development holds 35 units across four buildings, split into 7 one-bedroom and 28 three-bedroom homes. The units are income-restricted for residents earning at or below 40, 50, and 60 percent of Area Median Income, and some residents have already moved in.
FIFA's neutral-venue rules renamed Arrowhead to Kansas City Stadium and required all Chiefs signage to be covered for the tournament. Crews removed roughly 3,500 seats from the north sideline to fit a pitch stretched to 115 yards by 74 yards. The Chiefs laid a natural Bermuda grass field grown in North Carolina, planted in late April and stitched into the ground so it holds under cleats. The seat removal is temporary and built on the stadium's modular design, with sections set to be restored after the tournament. The venue hosts its first World Cup match on June 16, 2026.
The Chiefs promoted Matt Kenny to Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer and Brandon Hamilton to Project Executive of Facilities Development to lead the new stadium project. Hamilton will serve as construction lead, overseeing the architects, engineers, and project partners, and will report to Kenny. The team plans to leave Arrowhead for a $3 billion domed stadium and entertainment district in Wyandotte County, Kansas, targeted to open for the 2031 NFL season. MANICA and Populous are the two finalists competing to design the project, which a newly created Kansas sports authority will oversee.
KCulichi Sushi, a Mexican sushi concept with roots in Culiacan, Sinaloa, opened its first permanent restaurant at 542 Southwest Boulevard after building a following as a food truck that launched in November 2024. Owners Jorge Sotelo Garcia and brothers Noel and Fidel Lugo took over the roughly 3,300-square-foot former Bohemio Mexican Restaurant space, which seats about 30 tables. The menu centers on culichi-style rolls that are baked or fried and loaded with steak, shrimp, bacon, cream cheese, and melted mozzarella. The restaurant is closed Tuesdays, open noon to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and noon to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Callie Mae's Barkery & Bath, the dog treat bakery and self-wash bar that opened in Kansas City's Waldo neighborhood in September 2024, will open its second location in Lenexa in late fall 2026. The store will anchor the new Vista Village development at the southeast corner of Prairie Star Parkway and Ridgeview Road, near KC Bier Co. and Pecan Jacks. The Lenexa space will be larger than the Waldo original, with an expanded dog food selection and a third self-wash station, up from two at the first shop.
Mayor Quinton Lucas introduced an ordinance at the June 11 City Council meeting to pursue court-ordered receivership of the former Federal Reserve Bank building at 925 Grand Blvd, which has sat vacant since 2008. A private developer acquired the site in 2013 and won a City incentive package in 2016 for a roughly $182 million redevelopment with a 284-room hotel, a 450-space garage, and a 40,000-square-foot entertainment center, but spent about $42 million on asbestos removal and demolition before the project stalled. The City terminated the incentive deal in March 2025, and the site has since faced at least five foreclosures since January 2025, two Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, and a lawsuit alleging fraud against investors who committed $32.5 million through the federal EB-5 program. The ordinance has not yet been voted on by the full Council; if passed, it would route the case through Jackson County Circuit Court, require neighborhood input meetings, and a written progress report to the Council within 30 days.

Kansas City has officially approved 16 bars to operate under extended World Cup hours, allowing them to stay open from 6 AM to 5 AM during the tournament.
A new nightlife venue is set to debut in Kansas City's West Bottoms as Club Casablanca opens on June 12.
The Kansas City Current closed May with a 1-0 victory over Boston Legacy FC at CPKC Stadium, powered by a second-half goal from Temwa Chawinga.

KC MOVES TO SUPERSIZE CPKC STADIUM: A $1.4 BILLION RIVERFRONT PLAY, $235 MILLION IN CITY BONDS
Kansas City just took the first formal step toward making the world's first stadium built for a women's pro team a lot bigger. On June 11, Mayor Quinton Lucas introduced legislation (Ordinance 260565) to kick off a development process for an expansion of CPKC Stadium, home of the Kansas City Current, plus a broader buildout of the Berkley Riverfront. The city pegs the full vision at roughly $1.4 billion and frames it as a bid to make KC's riverfront the premier sports and entertainment district in the country, and one of the few in the world that is woman led, for women athletes.
"CPKC Stadium has already proven that world-class investment in women's sports pays off," Lucas said. "We look to build on the momentum, expanding a stadium district that will draw more visitors, create jobs, help Kansas City compete for more global and national events, and strengthen our riverfront for generations to come."
The numbers: the city would issue up to $235 million in special obligation bonds, backed by Current ownership, with additional investment sought from the State of Missouri through a new TIF plan. The upgrade could push stadium capacity up about 50%, to roughly 18,000 seats, alongside more parking, trail connections, new shops, and mixed-use development. The ordinance also clears the way to negotiate a lease with a Community Improvement District and/or Ballard Development, LLC for the levee promenade, Lydia pumpstation, and cafe zones, and it carries an accelerated effective date. The Berkley Riverfront piece adds trails, public gathering spaces, and levee amenities near the urban core. The city's pitch: thousands of construction jobs, new residents, and more tax revenue.
It also lands in a charged moment for stadium subsidies. On the same June 11 docket, the City Clerk formally received a citizen initiative petition (584 pages, filed June 5) seeking to restrict city "material support" for any stadium or arena seating 2,500 or more used by a for-profit business. The effort grew out of the fight over roughly $600 million in city help for a downtown Royals ballpark, but its language is broad enough to potentially reach other city-backed venues. The public-financing debate isn't hypothetical, and it's now playing out on the same agenda as the Current's ask.
Where it stands and what's next: June 11 was a first reading only, so nothing has been approved. The ordinance's status is officially "Referred," and it now sits with the City Council's Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee, which is scheduled to take it up on June 23. The City Manager is directed to negotiate a term sheet in the meantime. The full City Council keeps final say, so the real vote comes after committee. We'll be watching the June 23 hearing.

THE 23-HOUR BAR LIST:
16 SPOTS CAN NOW STAY OPEN 6 AM - 5 AM
Kansas City just cleared 16 bars to run nearly around the clock for the World Cup. Under a new Missouri law (Section 311.726), the city can let bars in designated entertainment districts serve up to 23 hours a day β 6 AM to 5 AM β for the length of the tournament (June 11βJuly 19). Citywide, every licensed bar can now stay open until 3 AM; the 5 AM tier is the exclusive club.
The catch: it's not automatic. Each bar had to file a liquor license and a KCPD-approved security plan with the city by the June 1 deadline. Only the approved 16 get the extended hours.
Where: the ordinance covers bars in the Riverfront, River Market, West Bottoms, Downtown, Midtown, Crossroads, 18th & Vine, Westport, and the Country Club Plaza.
The 16 approved bars: Missie B's Β· Becketts Β· The Quaff Β· The Blue Line Β· Tin Roof Β· The Levee Β· Up-Down KC Β· El Pueblito Β· Thirsty Bull Saloon Β· Howl at the Moon Β· Frost KC Β· Gambal's Social Club & Firefly Lounge Β· Laila Β· O'Dowds GastroPub Β· Jewel Event Space Β· Buzzard Beach

PATRICK MAHOMES IS NOW THE FIRST HALF-BILLION-DOLLAR PLAYER IN NFL HISTORY
No quarterback had ever signed a contract worth $500 million. This week, Patrick Mahomes did β and then some.
The Chiefs reworked Mahomes' deal to a total value of $504.75 million through 2033, the richest contract the league has ever seen. It adds two years and $239.05 million in new money to the back of the 10-year extension he signed in 2020, and beginning in 2027 it averages a record $64 million a season. With incentives and escalators, the number can climb to $522.25 million. Add it all up and the Chiefs have now committed roughly $689 million in new money to Mahomes between 2022 and 2033.
Here's the part that makes it more than a headline: Mahomes is six months removed from tearing both his ACL and LCL in a December loss to the Chargers. Most teams get cautious with that kind of money after that kind of injury. Kansas City went the other way β guaranteeing the first four years at signing and locking up the most important player in franchise history through the end of the decade.
It's also a chess move. Adding years lets the Chiefs push cap dollars down the road; a February restructure had already dropped his 2026 cap hit from $78.2M to $34.65M, freeing room to keep building around him. This is the third time in six years Mahomes and the Chiefs have reset the quarterback market β each time bending the math so the run can keep going.
GM Brett Veach called it "a landmark deal for a once-in-a-lifetime player," one who "changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise's history."
Translation for Kansas City: he's ours through 2033. Just Mahomes being Mahomes.
