PS. Don’t miss this week’s feature on KC Current’s national call-ups — a proud moment for Kansas City soccer and a glimpse of what’s ahead at CPKC Stadium.
⚽ KC CURRENT PLAYERS CALLED UP TO US WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM Michelle Cooper, Claire Hutton, and Ally Sentnor were called up for October USWNT matches against Portugal (Oct 23, 26) and New Zealand at CPKC Stadium (Oct 29)—the first-ever USWNT game there. 🎢 $338M HALO RIDGE THEME PARK APPROVED IN OLATHE Olathe approved the $338M Halo Ridge project by Lamar Hunt Jr.’s Loretto Properties at 119th & Renner. It’ll feature Michael’s WonderWorld—the world’s second ultra-accessible theme park—with 20+ inclusive rides, a 5,000-seat arena, and a 150-room hotel. Construction is delayed due to title issues.
✈️ HARRY S. TRUMAN TERMINAL OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED AT KCI AIRPORT Kansas City has officially named its airport the “Harry S. Truman Terminal,” honoring the 33rd U.S. President and Independence native. Sponsored by Mayor Quinton Lucas, the move celebrates Truman’s legacy. A $150,000 statue identical to the one in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda will be installed ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
🏪 KC LAUNCHES ‘OPEN DOORS!’ STOREFRONT GRANT PROGRAM Kansas City opened applications for “Open Doors!”—a $1.6M grant program offering up to $10K and rent aid to fill vacant storefronts before the 2026 World Cup. Over 400 businesses are interested, with selections expected by Feb 2026.
🚧 MODOT EYES WIDENING I-70 THROUGH INDEPENDENCE MoDOT is studying an expansion of I-70 through Independence from 3 to 4 lanes each way between I-435 and Route 7. It’s a high-priority project but currently unfunded. It’s separate from the $350M Blue Springs–Odessa project now underway.
🏥 RESEARCH MEDICAL CENTER BREAKS GROUND ON NEW ER Research Medical Center began construction on a $35M, 20,000-sq-ft ER at its Brookside Campus. The facility will feature 20 private rooms and open in 2027, expanding emergency access for Jackson County residents.
💰 KC ANNOUNCES HIRING FREEZE AMID $100M BUDGET GAP Kansas City will impose a citywide hiring freeze starting Oct 17 to address a projected $100M deficit for fiscal 2027. The city faces a critical April 2026 vote on renewing its 1% earnings tax, which funds half of discretionary spending.

🏢 DEVELOPMENT SCENE
Bonner Springs Greenlights Mattel Adventure Park Development
Bonner Springs City Council has unanimously approved a development agreement with EMAP-KC, LLC to bring a Mattel Adventure Park to the Kansas City metro. The plan includes a new tourism district featuring themed attractions, hotels, restaurants, retail, and interactive exhibits—marking the first of its kind in the Midwest.
Funded through STAR bonds, the project will utilize sales tax revenue generated within the district rather than property taxes. Under the agreement, the developer will cover all infrastructure costs, with the city providing water service. Key milestones require the developer to close on the land within 30 days, begin construction by October 2027, and substantially complete the project by October 2030.
Whether it’s an art opening, new mural, pop-up market, performance, or lifestyle experience, we want to see it. Kansas City’s creative scene is always growing, and we love featuring the artists, makers, and storytellers behind it.
If you’re hosting an exhibit, show, or event that deserves a spotlight, send it our way. It could be featured in our upcoming newsletters, social posts, or guides.
Let’s keep KC’s culture scene thriving, one submission at a time.

Three Kansas City Royals players—Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia, and Kyle Isbel—have been named finalists for the 2025 American League Gold Glove Awards, recognizing outstanding defensive performances. Witt Jr., last year’s winner, could make Royals history as the first shortstop to win back-to-back Gold Gloves and the first AL player to do so since 2018.
For Garcia and Isbel, it’s their first nomination, with potential to join Royals legends George Brett and Michael A. Taylor as position winners. The prestigious awards, determined through MLB manager and coach votes and the SABR Defensive Index, will be announced Nov. 2 on ESPN.

Between rooftop cocktails at Percheron, pasta perfection at Lazia, and a lobby that doubles as an art gallery, Crossroads Hotel delivers the full KC experience, charming, creative, and a little bit legendary.
