👀 This Week Around KC

  • 🚶‍♂️ KANSAS CITY MOVES TOWARD SAFER PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
Kansas City is considering a new ordinance aimed at improving pedestrian safety at crosswalks. The proposal would standardize signal timing and reduce reliance on push buttons, which city leaders say can lead to unsafe crossings. It also includes “leading pedestrian intervals,” giving walkers a head start before cars move. The changes are part of the city’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic deaths by 2030.
  • 🍴 LA FONDA CLOSES AFTER 47 YEARS ON SOUTHWEST BOULEVARD
La Fonda officially closed at the end of 2025, ending a 47-year run as a staple of Kansas City’s Mexican food scene. The family-owned restaurant cited retirement as the reason for closing, calling the decision bittersweet. The announcement sparked an outpouring of memories from longtime customers who grew up eating there.
  • 🚋 NEW TRANSIT ROUTE LINKS KCK TO THE KC STREETCAR
A new RideKC bus route now directly connects Kansas City, Kansas, to Missouri’s streetcar system. The route creates a smoother cross-state transit option, allowing riders to plug into the streetcar line without multiple transfers. Transit leaders say the connection improves regional access and mirrors how the metro was once connected by earlier transit systems.
  • 🐒 PRAIRIE VILLAGE BANS MONKEYS, EXCEPT ONE
Prairie Village approved an ordinance banning pet monkeys, with one highly specific exception. A single spider monkey already living in the city is allowed to stay under strict guidelines, including signage and liability insurance. The decision followed months of public debate and has sparked legal concerns from the owner.
  • 🏈 MISSOURI LAWMAKER PROPOSES PENALTIES TIED TO CHIEFS’ MOVE
A Missouri state senator introduced legislation aimed at penalizing the Kansas City Chiefs for their planned move to Kansas. The proposals include new ticket surcharges, limits on tax incentives, and requiring teams to cover demolition costs of publicly funded stadiums. The bills reflect growing tension as Missouri officials respond to the team’s relocation plans.
  • 📉 KC TRAFFIC DEATHS DROPPED 30 PERCENT IN 2025
Kansas City recorded a nearly 30 percent drop in traffic fatalities last year, marking the strongest progress yet under its Vision Zero program. City officials credit street redesigns, speed management, and safety infrastructure upgrades. While leaders call the numbers encouraging, pedestrian and cyclist deaths remain a major concern.

What you might have missed last week

  • Kansas’ proposed Chiefs stadium deal could commit nearly $2.8 billion in public funds upfront—and potentially over $6 billion long term—making it one of the largest sports subsidies in U.S. history.
  • After a decade, Boulevardia held its final celebration on June 14, 2025, closing a defining Kansas City festival with local music, culture, and Tech N9ne headlining.
  • Kansas City approved $450,000 for experts to study potential redevelopment of the Truman Sports Complex, planning proactively for its future beyond current stadiums.
  • Kansas City paused decisions on the Valentine neighborhood, giving KC Life one year to propose a transparent redevelopment plan without further demolitions.

PARKVILLE PLANS DOWNTOWN REDESIGN TO BALANCE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AND TRAFFIC

Parkville is moving forward with its Redefine Route 9 project, aiming to make downtown more pedestrian-friendly while addressing growing traffic demands from new businesses and developments. Concept B, the city’s preferred plan, proposes wider sidewalks, shorter crossing distances, a pedestrian-only First Street, a rebuilt downtown triangle, and a new east–west connector road alongside the railroad tracks.

While some residents worry about pedestrian safety near the tracks, city leaders point to similar layouts in Lenexa and recent crash data showing no incidents at Parkville crossings. The plan also includes ADA-compliant sidewalks and quieter train horns, with a projected cost of around $15 million, positioning downtown for the next 150 years.

Travis Kelce Makes History, Driving Big Impact Off the Field

Kansas City’s own Travis Kelce just became the first three-time winner of the Nationwide Charity Challenge, part of the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year program. His victory will direct $35,000 to Operation Breakthrough, highlighting his ongoing commitment to the community. While every NFL team nominates a player for the league-wide Walter Payton Man of the Year award, the Charity Challenge is a separate, fan-voted honor that raises funds for players’ charities. Kelce hasn’t yet claimed the overall Man of the Year title, but this milestone underscores his sustained off-field impact and marks a major win for Kansas City.

Kansas City is Changing FOREVER (And You’re Not Ready)
