🏢 DEVELOPMENT SCENE

Kansas City’s Rock Island Bridge on Track for 2025 Opening

The Rock Island Bridge project, which is transforming an old railroad bridge into the world’s first entertainment district over a river, has announced its first restaurant tenantRiver House—set to occupy the lower deck.

The upper deck will feature an event space, and the overall development will include restaurants, bars, a park, and access to the Kansas waterfront near the Hy-Vee Arena in the West Bottoms. Originally slated to open in summer 2024, the bridge is now on track for a fall 2025 debut, with delays attributed to ensuring high standards and navigating the complexities of historic infrastructure.

While the main bridge is expected to open next year, construction on the west side will continue into 2026, including trailheads, access ramps, stairways, and additional park space.

Chiefs Request Kansas Stadium Deadline Extension Amid Cross-State Stadium Talks

The Kansas City Chiefs have formally asked Kansas lawmakers to extend a June 30 deadline that would allow the team to access STAR bonds covering up to 70% of the cost to build a new stadium, headquarters, and practice facility on the Kansas side.

Senate President Ty Masterson confirmed that the Legislative Coordinating Council will meet July 7 to consider the extension, citing ongoing progress in talks between the Chiefs and the Kansas Department of Commerce.

While Missouri recently committed up to $1.5 billion toward stadium upgrades or replacements for both the Chiefs and Royals, Kansas remains in active pursuit, fueling the long-standing border rivalry over major economic development projects. Chiefs President Mark Donovan emphasized the project's scale and urged more time to finalize a deal that could represent one of Kansas' most significant economic wins.
