📚 KC LIBRARY WORKERS JUST VOTED TO UNIONIZE

Mid-Continent Public Library's 675 union-eligible employees voted to join the Communications Workers of America on May 19 and 20, with 436 voting in favor and 164 against. The Missouri State Board of Mediation ran the election, with results now pending certification. Once certified, MCPL workers will become the largest library union in the state of Missouri. MCPL serves 880,000 residents across the Kansas City metro.

🗳️ KC VOTERS WILL DECIDE $1.7 BILLION IN CITY INVESTMENTS THIS AUGUST

The Kansas City Council voted to place 5 measures on the August 4, 2026 ballot totaling up to $1.7 billion in city investments. The largest asks are $750 million for water infrastructure upgrades and $750 million for sewer improvements, both as revenue bonds that will not raise property taxes. The other measures include $100 million in affordable housing bonds, $100 million to repair Bartle Hall, Municipal Auditorium, and City Hall, and a 10-year renewal of the East Side's Central City Economic Development sales tax, which has delivered $88 million across 58 projects since 2017.

✈️ KCI IS GETTING A HOTEL SHAPED LIKE A B-2 STEALTH BOMBER

The Kansas City Council approved a 30-year ground lease on May 21 for the first new hotel at KCI Airport since 1974, a full 52 years after the last one was built. The 163-room, four-floor, $45 million hotel from developer Terminal C Hotel LLC is designed by NSPJ Architects to look like a B-2 stealth bomber, with wing-shaped extensions across the roof. The hotel will sit on 4 acres at Paris Street and Brasilia Avenue, northeast of the new terminal. Each floor carries a different KC theme in partnership with the National WWI Museum, the KC Zoo and Aquarium, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Groundbreaking is set for fall 2026 with a projected opening of spring 2028.

THE CHIEFS, ROYALS, AND SPORTING KC ALL JOINED KC’S WORLD CUP TEAM

The Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Sporting KC were all named Official Kansas City World Cup 2026 Host City Supporters on May 22 as the city ramps up for the tournament. GEHA Field at Arrowhead hosts 6 World Cup matches starting June 16, including a quarterfinal. Sporting KC is hosting 2 national team base camps at its own facilities: No. 3-ranked Argentina at Compass Minerals National Performance Center and No. 4-ranked England at Swope Soccer Village. A free ConnectKC26 shuttle adds a Kauffman Stadium stop running every 20 minutes from June 11 through July 13.

🟠 DOWNTOWN KC GOES ORANGE ON JUNE 25

The Dutch Orange Army will march through downtown Kansas City on June 25 ahead of the Netherlands vs. Tunisia World Cup Group F match. Fans gather at the Power & Light District at 11 a.m. before the procession heads to the FIFA Fan Festival at 12:15 p.m. The iconic Dutch Orange Bus leads the march after being shipped from the Netherlands to the Port of Galveston, Texas. Around 10,000 Dutch fans are expected, with entertainment from DJs FeestDJRuud and Yves Berendse and performers Yuki and JEA. The FIFA Fan Festival is held at the National World War I Museum and Memorial.

🍺 BIG GROVE BREWERY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN IN PRAIRIE VILLAGE

Iowa-based Big Grove Brewery, ranked in the national top 75, opened its first Kansas City metro location on May 22 at 7060 Mission Road in Prairie Village inside the former Macy's building. The 13,000-square-foot taproom has around 20 beers on tap, including offerings from Boulevard Brewing and Martin City Brewing Company. The taproom recorded five figures in sales during its soft opening, and grand opening day brought giveaways and face painting. Big Grove is donating $1 per case of its Neighborhood Beer to KC community micro-grants.

KC City Council Approves Country Club Plaza Master Plan, Delays Sidewalk Vote

The Kansas City City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve a new zoning framework for the Country Club Plaza, passing two of three ordinances on the agenda while delaying a third.

Background

Gillon Property Group, a Dallas-based real estate firm, purchased the Plaza in June 2024 for $175.6 million, a significant discount from the $660 million the previous owners paid in 2015. As of April 2025, nearly one-third of the Plaza's storefronts sat vacant. Gillon has since proposed a $1.5 billion revitalization plan for the shopping district. Thursday's votes were the City Council's first major action on that plan.

The Three Votes

Vote 1: Master Planned Development Rezoning — Passed Unanimously. The council approved rezoning approximately 23.5 acres at 4710 Jefferson Street from Heavy Business to Master Planned Development, establishing design standards for streets, sidewalks, building architecture, and maximum heights for future commercial projects across five blocks.

Vote 2: Plaza Bowl Overlay Amendment — Passed. The council voted to remove the Mill Creek block, northeast of 47th and Wyandotte streets, from the Plaza Bowl Overlay District, which had capped that block's building height at 45 feet. Historic preservation advocates had opposed the removal, arguing the change could leave the block without adequate restrictions if it ever shifted away from MPD zoning in the future.

Vote 3: Sidewalk Privatization — Delayed. An ordinance that would have transferred control of approximately 4.3 acres of public sidewalks across most of 15 Plaza blocks to Gillon was not voted on Thursday. City staff noted that privatizing the sidewalks would remove their status as a traditional public forum where First Amendment protections apply. No new date for the vote was announced.

What Is Still Pending

Thursday's approvals clear Gillon to move forward on planning, but several financial matters remain unresolved. A $210 million Tax Increment Financing plan approved by the city's TIF Commission in November 2025 still needs City Council approval. A separate property tax incentive package through the Port Authority of Kansas City, originally valued at up to $309 million over 30 years, was delayed in December 2025 after significant public opposition, including from Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Collier, who called it "a betrayal of our community's commitment to our schools." That package has not been revisited since. The approved MPD gives Gillon a four-year window to receive approval on at least one final project or face the lapse of the overall master plan.

Kansas City Breaks Into Top 10 Best Sports Business Cities

Kansas City was named the No. 9 best sports business city in the country, recognition driven by the region’s growing national sports profile, major venue investments, and steady lineup of high-profile events. Soccer has become a major force behind the city’s momentum, with more than $620 million invested into amateur and professional soccer facilities over the last 15 years, including CPKC Stadium, the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team. Kansas City is also preparing to host six matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, including a quarterfinal match, while serving as a base camp location for four national teams.

Beyond soccer, Kansas City continues to attract major sporting events across multiple leagues and organizations. T-Mobile Center has become a longtime home for Big 12 postseason basketball tournaments, while the city has recently hosted events tied to the NFL, NCAA, UFC, WWE, gymnastics, wrestling, and professional bull riding. Officials also highlighted several major projects expected to expand the region’s sports and entertainment footprint, including the upcoming American Royal complex near the Kansas Speedway area and the proposed downtown Royals stadium district. The recognition comes shortly after the Kansas City Sports Commission was named Sports Commission of the Year earlier this year.
