πŸ† Mahomes Wins Sports Emmy, πŸ₯Ž KC Diamonds Debut, ✈️ Downtown Airport Expansion

This is KC's most packed weekend in recent memory. USA plays Germany at Arrowhead on Saturday β€” KC's first ever World Cup match. The Mavericks open the Kelly Cup Finals at Cable Dahmer Arena on Friday night. The JuneteenthKC Cultural Parade, AfroKC Festival, and PrideFest are all happening Saturday. The World Cup is officially here. Here's everything you need to know going into the weekend.

  • The long-awaited return of the iconic Western Auto sign after Kansas City reached a deal to relight the landmark, though repairs won’t be completed before the World Cup opener

  • The official ribbon cutting for Southwest Boulevard’s $44 million transformation, converting one of Kansas City’s busiest corridors into a safer, more walkable and bike-friendly street

  • A proposed $73 million mixed-use development at 82nd and Metcalf in Overland Park that could bring 200 apartments, retail space, and more investment to the growing Metcalf corridor

  • KCulichi Sushi opening its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas, giving the viral food trailer a permanent home on Southwest Boulevard

  • Blue Springs breaking ground on a $5 million downtown streetscape project focused on walkability, pedestrian improvements, and long-term revitalization

Plus: more signs that cities across the Kansas City metro continue investing in infrastructure, redevelopment, and creating more walkable destinations for residents and visitors.

πŸ‘€ This Week Around KC

πŸ’‘ KC FINALLY HAS A DEAL TO RELIGHT THE WESTERN AUTO SIGN β€” JUST NOT BEFORE THE WORLD CUP KICKS OFF

After nearly a year dark, Kansas City finally has a deal to relight the Western Auto sign β€” just not in time for the World Cup opener. The City is contributing $100,000 from its Illuminate KC initiative. Infinity Sign Systems, the company that restored the sign in 2018, will handle repairs under a 10-year guarantee. Mayor Lucas is targeting mid-tournament or August. His quote: "By football season, when we're seeing Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, the Western Auto sign will be looking beautiful up there."

🚧 SOUTHWEST BOULEVARD IS DONE β€” KC’S $44M ROAD DIET PROJECT JUST GOT ITS RIBBON CUTTING

Southwest Boulevard converted from a four-lane speedway to a walkable, bikeable neighborhood street. The $44M project cut SW Blvd and 19th Street from two lanes each way down to one, adding parking, a bike lane, and new crosswalks. Ribbon cutting was June 3. Restaurant owner Nicholas GrΓΌnauer: "Everybody was just terrified trying to play frogger across the street. Over the last two weeks, you can see such a dramatic change." A second ribbon cutting for the Las Tarascas statue plaza under the bridge is set for June 16 at noon.

πŸ—οΈ ANOTHER $73M PROJECT IS COMING TO OP’S METCALF CORRIDOR β€” 200 APARTMENTS + RETAIL PLANNED AT 82ND STREET

Chicago-based 29th Street Capital is proposing a 5-story mixed-use building at 82nd and Metcalf with roughly 200 apartments and 7,000+ sq ft of ground-floor retail. Total investment: $73 million. Underground parking included. Developer is requesting $12.7M in TIF reimbursement and could break ground as early as this summer. TIF approval still pending β€” framed as proposed.

🍣 KCULICHI SUSHI OPENS ITS FIRST BRICK-AND-MORTAR ON SOUTHWEST BLVD IN KCK β€” THE VIRAL FOOD TRAILER FINALLY HAS A PERMANENT HOME

The Sinaloa-style sushi trailer that went viral across KC food influencer circles just opened its first restaurant at 542 Southwest Blvd. in KCK, taking over the former Bohemio Mexican Restaurant space. About 30 tables. Culichi-style rolls β€” baked or fried, loaded with steak, shrimp, or bacon, topped with melted mozzarella, chipotle sauce, or serrano peppers. Open Mon/Wed/Thu noon–9 PM, Fri–Sun noon–10 PM, closed Tuesdays. Owners plan World Cup watch parties through the tournament.

🚢 BLUE SPRINGS JUST BROKE GROUND ON A $5M DOWNTOWN WALKABILITY OVERHAUL

Blue Springs broke ground June 2 on a $5 million downtown streetscape project funded by a $40M bond issue voters approved in August 2024. Wider sidewalks, curb improvements, and pedestrian enhancements along Main Street. Mayor Chris Lievsay: "This project will help create a safer, more welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors while laying the foundation for continued growth and revitalization for years to come."
πŸ₯Ž KANSAS CITY JUST GOT ITS FIRST PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S SOFTBALL TEAM. THE HOME OPENER IS JUNE 17

The KC Diamonds tip off their inaugural season at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas on June 17 as part of the new Professional Softball League. Kansas City is one of just seven cities in the country with a team in the league's first season. The 39-game regular season runs through July 26 with a postseason in August. Games are broadcast on the All Women's Sports Network. KC already has the Current, the Chiefs, the Royals, and the World Cup. Now add professional women's softball to the list. Tickets and schedule at thekcdiamonds.com.

🏒 DEVELOPMENT SCENE

KC'S DOWNTOWN AIRPORT JUST GOT A MAJOR REZONING AND A $55M EXPANSION IS NOW ON DECK

Kansas City's Downtown Airport β€” Wheeler Field β€” has been sitting on a zoning problem for decades. The airport was technically operating as a nonconforming industrial use. On May 20, the City Plan Commission fixed that, rezoning 587 acres from industrial to KCIA airport zoning. The practical effect: future development at the airport can now move through an administrative approval process instead of coming back before the commission every time. The city said it "takes away potential obstacles that would delay future development" over the next two decades.

The rezoning was filed specifically to clear the path for the Apex Aero Center β€” a $55 million private investment at the downtown airport. The project includes facilities for nearly 40 aircraft, 150,000 square feet of hangar floor space, a 12,000-square-foot passenger terminal, and 157 parking stalls. Substantially complete by 2027. Still needs City Council approval before construction begins.

KARLAFTIS PLAYED THE ENTIRE 2025 SEASON ON A BROKEN HAND AND NOBODY KNEW UNTIL OTAs THIS WEEK

George Karlaftis broke his right hand during the 2025 season in Week 10, had surgery during the bye week, and came straight back without missing a game. He still finished with 6 sacks β€” second on the team β€” playing through it the whole time. Nobody knew until Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen revealed it at OTAs this week. His teammates voted him the Ed Block Courage Award for it. He's fully healthy now heading into 2026.
