Published 26 days ago • 9 min read
As Kansas City prepares for a historic year on the global stage, new developments, major investments, and community initiatives continue shaping the region’s momentum. From public art installations and international soccer teams arriving for the World Cup to infrastructure projects, school expansions, and new retail development, this week’s updates highlight how the metro is growing while preparing to welcome the world. Here’s what’s driving the conversation across Kansas City right now.
This edition, we’re diving into:
Parade of Hearts expands to 150 sculptures across the metro ahead of the World Cup.
Independence approves AI data center and supporting bond package.
Argentina chooses KC for its 2026 World Cup training base.
Olathe and De Soto pass school bonds for new buildings and upgrades.
KC Transit launches Transit Ambassador program for World Cup visitors.
New Dillons store moves forward in Northland after rezoning approval.
From global sporting events and public art to education funding and neighborhood growth, these updates show how Kansas City is preparing for its next chapter.
❤️ 150 PARADE OF HEARTS SCULPTURES COMING TO KC REGION IN 2026 The 2026 Parade of Hearts will feature 150 artist-designed heart sculptures placed across the Kansas City metro, its largest installation yet. The public art display will run from April through August as the region prepares to host the World Cup and showcase local artists and culture.
🖥️ INDEPENDENCE APPROVES MASSIVE AI DATA CENTER DESPITE RESIDENT PUSHBACK The Independence City Council approved incentives and a bond package for a massive hyper scale AI data center campus planned off Little Blue Parkway and Highway 78. The vote came after hours of public testimony and strong opposition from residents concerned about environmental impacts, energy use, and tax breaks tied to the project.
⚽ ARGENTINA TO STAY AT BERKLEY RIVERFRONT DURING 2026 WORLD CUP The defending World Cup champions Argentina will stay along the Berkley Riverfront in Kansas City while in town for the 2026 tournament. The team had already announced it would train at Sporting KC’s Compass Minerals National Performance Center, but the riverfront lodging location confirms where the squad will be based during the competition.
🏫 OLATHE AND DE SOTO VOTERS PASS MAJOR SCHOOL BONDS Voters approved a $389 million bond for Olathe Public Schools and a $99.85 million bond for De Soto schools, funding new buildings, expansions, and facility upgrades to accommodate rapid population growth in Johnson County.
🚌 KC TRANSIT LAUNCHES WORLD CUP AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Kansas City transit officials are rolling out a new Transit Ambassador program to help visitors navigate buses and major routes during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, providing on-the-ground guidance and rider support as hundreds of thousands of fans arrive.
🛒 NEW DILLONS GROCERY STORE MOVES FORWARD IN KC’S NORTHLAND Plans for a new Dillons grocery store and gas station in Kansas City’s Northland moved forward after the Kansas City Planning Commission unanimously approved rezoning for the project. The nearly 100,000-square-foot store would be built on about 12 acres at North Oak Trafficway and Shoal Creek Parkway, with the proposal now heading to City Council for final approval.
What you might have missed last week
Children's Mercy Kansas City has submitted a major master plan to the city outlining a long-term redevelopment of its Adele Hall campus on Hospital Hill.
Six Flags announced it’s selling Worlds of Fun as part of a $342 million deal that includes seven regional parks across the U.S. and Canada.
Pennway Point Project Stalls Nearly Two Years After Planned Opening
The long-anticipated Pennway Point entertainment district in Kansas City remains largely unfinished nearly two years after its original early-2024 opening target. The site currently shows little visible progress, with construction materials scattered and buildings still appearing incomplete despite earlier assurances from developer 3D Development that additional openings would occur in 2025. When asked for an update, a principal from the development group acknowledged that projects can face delays but did not provide a timeline for completion. The lack of movement has frustrated some residents, who say the situation reflects broader concerns about accountability and follow-through on major projects in the city. Local officials say they remain hopeful the developer will move forward because of the potential economic impact on downtown, but as of now, no new schedule has been announced for finishing or opening the project.

Big 12 Unveils High-Tech LED Glass Court for 2026 Tournaments
The Big 12 Conference is introducing a full LED video court, known as the ASB GlassFloor, for both its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments this year, bringing a dramatic visual upgrade to postseason play. The court can instantly shift designs and graphics, as shown in a preview where a blue Kansas Jayhawks layout transformed into a gray tournament-branded floor. Beyond customizable court designs, the technology will display live shot charts, interactive timeout games, and animated reactions to big moments. The GlassFloor has previously appeared in EuroLeague competition and at the 2024 NBA All-Star Game, but this marks its debut in Big 12 tournament action. The women’s tournament tips off March 4 and runs through March 8, with a potential March 9 final if BYU Cougars advances, while the men’s tournament follows March 10–14, featuring several nationally ranked teams.
Classic Colonial Charm in Lenexa’s Indian Woods Neighborhood
Welcome to 8221 Park Street, where timeless Colonial-style charm meets comfortable living in one of Lenexa’s most established neighborhoods. Built in 1986 and set on a spacious quarter-acre lot in Indian Woods, this five-bedroom, four-bath home offers nearly 2,900 square feet of thoughtfully designed space surrounded by mature trees and a quiet residential setting.
Inside, the home carries a warm, traditional feel with wide plank flooring and a welcoming living room highlighted by exposed wood beams that add character and depth. The main level flows easily between spaces, with a kitchen that overlooks the lush backyard, a formal dining room for gatherings, and a cozy living area anchored by a brick fireplace and built-ins. A second sitting room provides flexibility for a home office, reading space, or additional lounge area.
Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms including a spacious primary suite with vaulted ceilings and an ensuite bath featuring heated floors—an inviting retreat at the end of the day. The finished basement expands the living space even further with a full entertainment area and wet bar, plus a conforming bedroom and full bathroom that work perfectly for guests, extended family, or a private getaway space.
Out back, the yard feels like a peaceful escape with mature landscaping and no direct neighbors behind you, offering a level of privacy that’s increasingly hard to find. All of this sits just minutes from the Mill Creek Trail, the Westchester Square shopping district, and Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, with the neighborhood HOA pool conveniently located down the street.
