KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension Targets May Opening Ahead of World Cup

Kansas City’s new 0.7-mile streetcar extension connecting the Berkley Riverfront and CPKC Stadium to the existing downtown line is on track for a potential May opening, just in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After two years of construction, crews are now in the testing phase, checking systems like overhead wires, power substations, and route clearances to ensure safe operations. Driver training is set to begin in April, which may temporarily affect some routes as testing continues.

The expansion comes as streetcar ridership continues to rise following the recent Main Street extension, with officials expecting even more growth once the Riverfront line opens. The project also aligns with other riverfront upgrades, including a new pavilion and pedestrian bridge, all aimed at enhancing accessibility and preparing the area for a global influx of visitors.

CPKC Stadium Earns Top Honors as One of the Best Playing Surfaces in Pro Sports

CPKC Stadium, home of the Kansas City Current, has been named a 2025 Professional Sports Field of the Year by the Sports Field Managers Association, recognizing excellence in field quality, innovation, and maintenance.

As the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a professional women’s soccer team, it also becomes the first of its kind in the National Women's Soccer League to receive this award.
