Missouri House Approves Stadium Funding Plan To Keep Chiefs & Royals

The Missouri House has advanced a proposal aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in the state by offering new financial incentives for stadium construction or renovation.

The plan, supported by Governor Mike Kehoe, includes state-issued bonds covering up to half the stadium costs and up to $50 million in tax credits, though it leaves details like location and total cost unresolved.

This move is in response to competitive offers from Kansas, which recently passed its own incentive package. However, the bill faces criticism in the Missouri Senate for favoring wealthy team owners and was met with resistance during debate. With the current stadium leases ending in 2031 and growing pressure from Kansas, Missouri lawmakers are working against a tight deadline to act. Still, concerns remain over the effectiveness and fairness of using public funds for professional sports facilities, a debate intensified by Missouri’s past experience losing the St. Louis Rams.
